Solar Power Australia originally installed these lights in 2003 to provide both lighting for the break wall and a guide for incoming ships to use when entering and leaving the port.

Since then Solar Power Australia have been in a maintenance contract with Newcastle Port Corp to ensure complete reliability of the lights as they are located in the harshest coastal environment.

Recent maintenance included bringing the lights up to the latest technology and includes Bluetooth communication for system maintenance and performance data logging.
